In the US, many internet providers are working on extending their fiber networks so users can benefit from faster and reliable internet as compared to older broadband options.

I personally use fiber internet for online gaming since it leads to a more responsive feel, giving me an edge, especially in fast-paced games. And for that, I have subscribed to AT&T Internet connection. 

AT&T Fiber Internet costs less than $60,with speeds ranging from 300Mbps to 5Gbps (Speeds based on wired connection), depending on your internet plan. I have been using their fiber internet, which has excellent performance during peak hours, and they offer no data caps, meaning you can use unlimited data without your internet being throttled.

Moreover, in this article, I have discussed fiber optic internet, which is the latest wired internet technology in the market. Many people have a fiber internet connection at their homes and offices, but they do not know what it is and how it differs from other traditional broadband internet connections.

Fiber optic internet is also called fiber internet or just fiber. It is the most advanced wired internet technology that is available to consumers, which can reach speeds up to 10 Gbps (Gigabits per second) in some areas.

It uses fiber optic cables that can send data as fast as 70% the speed of light. Moreover, it is not affected by severe weather conditions as compared to other traditional connections.

Interestingly, they have minimal outage problems if we compare them to other connection types, and they can also resist electric interference. 

Moreover, fiber internet is best for businesses and homes since multiple users can connect to it at once. This allows the user to:

·         It can back up your hard drive to the cloud, which can include large videos and photos in less time

Many people think that fiber internet is a new technology, but in reality, it started in the 1970s when it was used by the telecommunications sector for the first time.

Fiber optic cables were laid under the ocean in 1988 to connect the US to Europe. With time, more lines were laid under the ocean to form a network of fiber optic cables that is located throughout the globe.

Fiber optic network, with its reliable transmission of data and high speed, has allowed major progress in the telecom field. In my opinion, fiber internet technology has revolutionized the information technological age.

In many countries, fiber optic lines are commonly used as they have replaced copper lines a long time ago and making it the “backbone” of the current internet technology.

Moreover, recently, it has become cost-effective to install fiber lines as compared to copper lines. With time, as technology keeps evolving, fiber networks can be seen in different sectors, making work efficient and seamless for them.

How Does Fiber Internet Work?

Fiber internet works in three easy steps, as explained below:

1.       Data to light conversion:

·         Data is encoded into binary numbers (1 and 0).

·         Transmitters use an LED or laser to send signals.

2.       Light transmission through fiber optics:

·          light pulses travel through a plastic core or an ultra-thin glass

·         Thin glass or core is surrounded by a layer of a material known as “cladding“.

·         The cladding leads the light to bounce as it travels down the fiber optic cable, making sure that it does not escape the thin glass or core.

·         Fiber is protected through a buffer coating to shield it from external forces that can affect the signal strength.

3.       The journey from the internet to your home:

·         Data is transmitted from the data center, which is made up of strong fiber lines

·         The internet signals then reachthe local ISP, Internet Service Provider,and from there to your home or office

How Fiber Internet is Different from Other Connection Types

Fiber internet is different from other connection types like DSL, satellite, and cable because it offers symmetrical upload and download speeds and can handle more connected devices simultaneously without lagging.

It is different from other connection types in terms of:

Speed: 

It offers a faster speed than other connections due to its symmetrical download and upload speeds, which is ideal for high-demand activities such as transferring large files, cloud gaming, and 4k streaming. Cable internet provides fast download speeds, but the upload speed is a bit slower, which affects the internet performance.

Reliability:

Fiber internet is more reliable compared to other broadband connections because there is a lower chance that it can be affected due to bad weather conditions, it can handle higher speeds during peak hours, and it can handle more physical pressure.

This is because fiber transmits data through pulses of light, while cable internet uses electrical signals that are transmitted through copper wires that can be distorted by electrical interference.

Capacity:

Fiber internet offers high capacity, which means it can handle more devices connected to it simultaneously without slowing down, making it an ideal option for big households and offices.

Security:

 Fiber optic cables are secure since their signals are difficult to intercept as compared to electrical signals in other internet connections.
